Prayers

Chanted prayers (pujas) are an important aspect of a spiritual path. They allow us to accumulate merit, purify negativity, receive blessings from enlightened beings, and focus our mind on meaningful objects.  Additionally, these prayers are a way for us to come together as a spiritual community and create causes for the Centre and its spiritual activities to flourish.

Below is a list of the pujas we practice together at the center. Please check the online calendar for any schedule changes. All pujas are free of charge. Everyone is welcome.

Je Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden

Heart Jewel

This is the daily practice of many Kadampa practitioners. It contains the essence of Kadampa practice: relying upon our Spiritual Guide in the aspects of Wisdom Buddha Je Tsongkhapa and Wisdom Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. By engaging in this practice we can naturally increase our wisdom, compassion, and spiritual power. This practice contains a pause for meditation on Lamrim, the stages of the path to enlightenment.

Wishfulfilling Jewel

Similar to Heart Jewel, this practice involves relying upon our Spiritual Guide in the aspects of Wisdom Buddha Je Tsongkhapa and Wisdom Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden.  In the first part of this practice we make prayers to Je Tsongkhapa and draw close to him.  In the second part, we make offerings and requests to Dorje Shugden to protect the Dharma in our hearts, and to remove inner and outer obstacles to Dharma practice.  This practice includes a special offering ceremony called a “tsog offering”.  If you would like, please bring a small vegetarian food item to offer.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide

This practice is a special Guru Yoga of Je Tsongkhapa which is often used as a preliminary for Vajrayana Mahamudra.  Practitioners come together twice a month as a Centre to make special offerings to our Spiritual Guide on or around the 10th and 25th of the month.  This practice includes a special offering ceremony called a ‘tsog offering’.  If you would like, please bring a small vegetarian food offering.

Melodious Drum: Victorious in All Directions

This practice is a ‘kangso’ or ‘fulfilling and restoring ritual’ and is done once a month, on the 29th, at Kadampa centres.  It is the extensive practice of Dorje Shugden, the Wisdom Dharma Protector.  In this practice we make extensive praises, offerings, and requests to Dorje Shugden to accumulate a vast amount of merit, purify a vast amount of negative karma and restore our broken commitments.  These prayers contain a special offering ceremony called a ‘tsog offering’.  If you would like, please bring a small vegetarian food offering.

Green Tara prayers

Liberation from Sorrow

The 8th of every month is Tara Day!  Buddha Green Tara has a special connection Kadampa Buddhism.  She promised to care for those who sincerely practiced Kadam Lamrim (the stages of the path to enlightenment).  Buddha Green Tara is a female Buddha who represents the swift compassionate action of all the Buddhas.  Her left leg is extended off her lotus seat, symbolizing she is ready to quickly come to our aid  By relying upon Buddha Green Tara, she will help us with our problems and protect us from danger.

Powa: Transference of Consciousness

The practice of powa, or transference of consciousness, is done on behalf of recently deceased individuals.  Through making offerings, engaging in purification practice, and relying on the blessings of Buddha Avalokiteshvara, we help those that have recently died take a fortunate rebirth.

35 Confession Buddhas

Bodhisattva’s Confession of Moral Downfalls

This practice, also called the practice of the “Thirty-five Confession Buddhas” involves making prostrations to the Thirty-five Confession Buddhas who help us to purify different types of negative karma.  This practice is essential for modern bodhisattvas in training.  By repeatedly engaging in this practice, we will eventually completely purify our mind.

Medicine Buddha Prayer

Medicine Buddha represents the healing power of all Buddhas.  By relying upon Medicine Buddha, we can heal the inner sickness of our delusions as well as the outer sicknesses of illness.  We can engage in this practice on behalf of ourselves, or on behalf of others who may be suffering.  This practice will alternate with other Buddhas’ practice on Sunday mornings.

Manjushri

Treasury of Wisdom

Buddha Manjushri is the manifestation of all the wisdom of all the Buddhas.  By relying upon Buddha Manjushri, we can quickly develop our wisdom, especially the wisdom realizing emptiness, or the way that things actually exist.  In this practice we offer praises, offerings and requests to Buddha Manjushri.  This practice will alternate with other Buddhas’ practices on Sunday mornings.

The Yoga of Buddha Amitayus

Buddha Amitayus is the Buddha of Long Life, Wisdom and Good Fortune.  In this context ‘yoga’ means special way of relying on our Spiritual Guide in the aspect of Buddha Amitayus.  By engaging in this practice we can increase our lifespan, develop wisdom, and accumulate merit.  This practice will alternate with other Buddhas’ practices on Sunday mornings.

Precepts – A Pure Life

At 6:30am on the 15th of every month, we engage in a fasting purification practice in conjunction with taking the Eight Mahayana Precepts for the period of 24 hours.  During this time, we refrain from negative actions and focus on virtuous, meaningful objects.
