Generating Inner Contentment – Meditation Retreat

generating inner contentmentGenerating Inner Contentment Meditation Retreat

Saturday 19 December
9:30am – 1:30pm
with Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Kunden
Following the book, the How to Understand the Mind

Have you ever thought to think how painful the mind of discontent is? Probably not because when we are discontent we are looking elsewhere for happiness –  a new job, a new house, a new partner, a vaccine! – we look everywhere but the mind of discontent itself. We can not solve the problem of discontent externally. Externally, no matter what our situation, we are internally impoverished. We need more! and more! and more!
The inner wealth of contentment is a mind, an inner experience, generated from wisdom, that keeps us happy no matter the situation, whether we are rich, poor or somewhere in the middle.

The morning retreat consists of three one-hour sessions, with a half-hour break between sessions. Each session consists of a teaching, guided meditation and time for question and answer.  and a guided meditation and question and answer. Everyone is welcome to our generating inner contentment meditation retreat, regardless of background or experience.

Come and spend a meaningful Saturday morning on retreat and generate inner contentment.

Seize the Day! – half day meditation retreat

Seize the Day – Meditation Retreat

seize the day retreatSaturday 26 September

Following the book, the Joyful Path of Good Fortune

In Great Beyond Sorrow Sutra, Buddha says,
When many different animals have been in a field and have left their footprints, we see that it is the elephant that leaves the deepest footprint. In a similar way, when we have practiced many different meditations we will experience their effects; but it is the meditation on death that leaves the deepest imprint in our mind.

Seize the Day Retreat: Meditations on death to inspire us to accomplish the real meaning of life. For this morning retreat we will follow the traditional meditations on death using nine ways of reasoning: to gain conviction that death is certain; the time of death is uncertain; at the time of death only our practice of Dharma will be of benefit to us.

Although we intellectually understand that death is certain for us and we do not know when. Although we know that we will face death alone, we put off thinking about our death. In fact, our normal thought is, “I will not die” and we do not prepare ourselves for the inevitable. Engaging in this meditation practice will make a deep impression on our mind, like the elephant’s footprint. If we meditate on death now, we will not experience fear, frustration, anxiety and despair at our death time. We will be free of these disturbing emotions and will use our life meaningfully. Venerable Geshe-la says when we have experience of this meditation: “When death comes we will feel like a child returning to the home of its parents and we will pass away gladly.” If we are thinking about death, then we will be thinking of gathering the protections of spiritual experience for ourself and for others.

The morning retreat consists of three one-hour sessions, with a half-hour break between sessions. Each session consists of a teaching, guided meditation and time for question and answer. Everyone welcome to the seize the day retreat, regardless of background or experience.

Half Day Morning Course

Freedom from Disappointment

10am - 1pm

with Resident Teacher Kelsang Kunden

We have all had the experience - time and time again - of expectations crashing to the ground and that familiar feeling of disappointment arising in our mind. Where does this disappointment come from? Although it seems to come from the people, places and things around us, in reality, it comes from uncontrolled desire, or attachment, arising in our mind. Disappointment is a painful emotion that we can overcome with meditation and contemplations from Buddha's teachings on the Four Noble Truths. Through training our mind in this way, we can begin to let go of unrealistic expectations and their subsequent disappointments and instead experience a balanced, stable, happy mind.

In this half day morning course, Gen Kelsang Kunden will explain meaningful contemplations and meditations that will protect us from feelings of disappointment so that we can maintain a positive, happy and balanced mind whatever situation arises. Join us and enjoy freedom from disappointment.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso teaches that karma is a meaningful object. An understanding of karma brings great meaning to our lives. And also, in difficult times, an understanding of karma gives us great encouragement and hope. By contemplating karma during difficult times, we are applying wisdom. This wisdom helps us to understand all our experiences, both good and bad, and keeps our mind peaceful and positive.

On this Saturday morning course, Kelsang Kunden will give a teaching on karma, and an explanation of how to apply our understanding of karma to our meditation and contemplation practice so that we remain encouraged as we look toward the future.

This year has been a challenging year for many. We may find ourselves experiencing anxiety and worry, irritation and boredom with the loss of our ordinary routines and enjoyments. This can have a profound impact on our day to day lives: sleeplessness, irritation, boredom and impatience. Or we just feel overwhelmed!

By changing our perspective through relying on Buddha’s wisdom, we can see that these difficult times offer us a unique, special opportunity to train in transforming our fear and anxiety into wisdom. By identifying the real source of our anxiety we can learn how to move our mind away from it and towards a deep, stable inner peace.

During this half day course, Kelsang Kunden will explain methods to overcome our anxiety and worry with specific meditation practices and contemplations that we can continue at home.

This course will be followed by a retreat the following Saturday. It is not necessary to attend both the course and retreat together.

If you would like to attend the in-class session, please RSVP as we have limited space. We will also be broadcasting this class via Zoom and you are welcome to attend online. Please purchase your on-line tickets via Eventbrite or interact eTransfer.

Overcoming Laziness

We plan to sit down to meditate, but we pick up our phone instead. We are contemplating a meaningful insight but then we ask Alexa to play a tune from the Eighties. We wake up with a bored, lazy feeling but we are too discouraged to do anything about it. Does this sound familiar? Our distractions may take different forms  than when Buddha was teaching 2500 years ago, but essentially they are the same: distractions. Distractions that arise from the laziness of attachment and the laziness of indolence. Fortunately, Buddha taught meditations to help us overcome all forms of spiritual laziness. By practicing these “opponents” to laziness, we can easily fulfil our spiritual goals and make progress toward establishing and maintaining a stable and lasting inner peace and happiness in our hearts.
