Our General Program Classes

A highly accessible program designed to address everyday problems with simple and practical advice from Buddha’s teachings as well as guided meditations.

These classes and courses provide a basic introduction to Buddhist teachings and meditations. Through these we can learn how to use Buddha’s advice as a solution to our daily problems. In this way we come to experience a sense of peace and happiness in our lives.

Our Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening classes cover a different topic or ‘series’ each month. The Sunday class and the Wednesday class weekly topic is the same. Each series looks at an aspect of Buddha’s teaching with advice on how to practically integrate the wisdom and experience of that teaching into our daily life. By practically applying Buddha’s wisdom into our daily life, we will experience the benefits of meditation and overcome the negative feelings and thoughts that continuously bring us down.

Join us for our Meditations for World Peace class on Sunday morning. Our meditation classes on Sunday mornings are by donation. We also offer lunchtime meditations during the week. Scroll below for more information on our upcoming classes.

Also you are welcome to join us for Lunchtime Meditations from 12:15 – 12:45 Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each class consists of a short teaching and meditation. The teachings this winter are based on overcoming painful feelings such as anxiety and worry, based on the book How to Solve Our Human Problems.

Our Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday classes are drop-in. You can drop-in to any class. To attend classes, you have the option to buy a ticket online or pay at the door. At the Centre you also have the option to buy a series pass, a card that will cover the payment for any four classes of your choice. Or if you would like to attend classes, regularly sign up for a monthly membership that will cover all your classes with one payment.

What to Expect in a Class

Our meditation classes are for anyone interested in learning how to meditate, regardless of background or beliefs. Classes are designed to give a broad introduction to Buddhist meditation, teachings, and practice.
Every class includes a chance to practise meditation. No prior experience, special equipment or special clothes are necessary for our onsite classes – just come as you are.

Classes are all standalone individual classes that are presented in a series. You do not need to attend the full series to attend a class.

What to expect in a course

Meditation Class Series

Our series of classes are based on Eight Verses of Training the Mind – beautiful and inspiring advice from Bodhisattva Langri Tangpa. These ancient teachings, resonate with modern people today, with profound advice on how to transform adverse conditions to the spiritual path. By contemplating, meditating and applying the wisdom of these verses in our daily life, we can gain a deep experience of inner peace, happiness and love.

The Cherishing Heart

January meditation series

In this January series we will look at how we can learn to cherish others. By developing this mind of love for others we can fulfill our wish for unchanging deep and lasting happiness.  We will look in depth at the verse:

learning to cherish others

With the intention to attain
The ultimate, supreme goal
That surpasses even the wish-granting jewel,
May I constantly cherish all living beings.

By contemplating the deep meaning of this verse and by putting these teachings into practice, we will improve our capacity to view living beings with a warm heart and balanced mind.

Enhancing Cherishing Love

Whenever I associate with others,
May I view myself as the lowest of all;
And with a pure intention,
May I cherish others as supreme.

With this verse we learn to deeply appreciate other living beings. To do this we need stop our negative pattern of focusing on their faults and instead to pay attention to their good qualities. By training in this way we can also learn to overcome the deluded pride we often carry that manifests as arrogance, low self -esteem and lack of confidence.

Exchanging Self with Others

Examining my mental continuum throughout
    all my actions,
As soon as a delusion of self-cherishing develops
Whereby I or others would act inappropriately,
May I firmly face it and avert it.

Our daily problems arise from the negative mind of self-cherishing – a completely mistaken mind that has no basis in reality. This negative mind is the source of all our mental pain and the creator of all our difficulties. By learning to recognize this mind of self-cherishing when it arises, we will deepen our wisdom and be able to generate a powerful peaceful mind. Abandoning self-cherishing is the key to increasing happiness, love, and compassion. And we can accomplish this by using all situations we encounter as an opportunity to train in overcoming this most negative mind.

Great Compassion

Whenever I see unfortunate beings
Oppressed by evil and violent suffering,
May I cherish them as if I had found
A rare and precious treasure.

Having gained some experience of cherishing all living beings, we can now extend and deepen our compassion to extend to all living beings. This compassion, univeral compassion, will eventually transform into the compassion of a Buddha who actually has the power to liberate all living beings.

Wishing Love

June meditation series - transforming adverse conditions

Even if someone I have helped
And of whom I had great hopes
Nevertheless harms me intentionally,
May I see him or her as my holy Spiritual Guide.

The main purpose of this verse is to teach us how to develop and improve our experience of wishing love. Through contemplating deeply how those that we deeply love and cherish lack true happiness, we develop a strong and powerful experience of wishing love – wishing all living beings to experience true happiness.

June meditation series - transforming adverse conditions

When things are going well, and people are kind and treating us with respect, it is not so difficult to wish for them to be happy. However, if our love for others diminishes as soon as they cause us problems or fail to appreciate us, this indicates that our love is not pure. For as long as our good feelings for others are conditional upon their treating us well, our love will be weak and unstable and we will not be able to transform it into universal love. However if we develop real patience our mind will be as stable as a mountain and as calm as the depths of an ocean.
